Advancing Dementia and Alzheimer’s, Awareness Together
Growing older comes with changes, but when memory loss begins to affect daily life, families are often left with questions they never expected to face.
That reality was at the heart of a community seminar held on June 2nd, 2026, where attendees aged 60+ gathered to learn more about dementia and the challenges it creates for older adults and those who care for them.
Arsalan Hamid, PMHNP-BC, a mental health specialist from Beautiful Mind Health, presented a special session on understanding Dementia and related problems for Older Adults, Families, and Caregivers.
Rather than focusing solely on the clinical side, Arsalan spoke about its human side. He described how dementia affects not only the individual but also spouses, adult children, friends, and caregivers who often find themselves navigating unfamiliar responsibilities.
He added,
“Dementia is a cognitive mental disorder that disrupts the life of the entire family and not the patient alone.” He discussed common warning signs that families may notice, including memory problems, confusion, difficulty completing familiar tasks, and changes in mood or behavior.
Understanding what is happening and knowing where to seek support can make a meaningful difference for everyone involved.
Throughout the session, Arsalan assisted attendees from diverse professional backgrounds in better understanding dementia and Alzheimer’s, and how they differ from normal age-related forgetfulness.
For many, the challenges and struggles seemed to be at home. Some are caring for an aging parent, supporting a spouse, or simply planning for the future. Therefore, participants were eager to learn more about recognizing early signs of dementia and responding with compassion.
It also highlighted the important role of caregivers in looking after Alzheimer’s patients and how physically and emotionally demanding it is. Arsalan encouraged caregivers to prioritize their own well-being and seek support when needed, emphasizing that sustainable care begins with a healthy support system.
During the session, our speaker also shed light on the challenges families face when caring for a loved one. As memory problems become more noticeable, everyday tasks such as taking medication, keeping appointments, or following routines can become difficult without support.
He shared practical tips to help keep dementia patients active and involved in daily life. You can help reduce confusion and provide comfort by establishing fixed routines, maintaining familiar surroundings, and ensuring regular interaction with family and friends.
After the presentation, the QA session helps attendees understand memory loss as a cognitive ailment, learn about better caregiving methods, and learn when to seek professional help. The discussion reflected concerns many families face as parents and loved ones grow older.
